Fall has arrived

As I stepped out of the house into the chilly night air I drew in a deep breath. Ahhh, the smell of Fall, yep that's what it was. Oh, how I love this time of year! Fall is my favorite season and every year I wait in anticipation of its coming. There's nothing like bundling up for a long walk with the crunch, crunch of the dry leaves under my feet. Or the smell of fireplaces burning - its such an intoxicating smell.

Fall creeps in like a cat stalking a mouse. And before you know it everything around me is changing. The leaves turn to their beautiful colors of red, orange, and yellow. The air gets a crisp chill and the smell...oh, the smell. All around me is changing and it all brings a smile to my face.

Changes not only occur outside but inside. The summer linens come off the bed and the fruity, flowery candles are put away. Out come the fall decorations, pumpkin spice candles and flannel sheets.

And on the weekends when time permits I busy myself with making soups and pumpkin or banana breads. Their wonderful smells fill my house and again a smile is brought to my face. I will freeze the soups to eat later in the cold of winter. And enjoy the breads hot out of the oven with some butter.

Get out....take a walk...breath in the fresh/crisp air. Smell the fireplaces that burn and listen to the crunch and crackle of the leaves. Bake some bread or make some soup and then tell me if you too dont enjoy Fall as much as I do. Happy Fall time Everyone!!

Home Sick

It came on suddenly and without warning. Fevor, chills, sore throat, headache, earache and before I knew it I was down for the count. The simplest things such as swallowing water, and sleeping became too painful to handle. So there I lay on the couch like a dead fish out of water, trying to hydrate myself but the pain too intense & unbearable.

Why is it when you get sick as an adult it always seems worse? And I know I am not alone in thinkin things like "I might just die". Is it because you are forced to take care of yourself? Suddenly you realize how good you had it when Mom was around to wipe your forehead, bring you chicken noodle soup, rub your back, read to you and tell you "you'll be better in no time"

I hate being sick and for someone who hardly ever gets sick its especially hard to handle. But ironically its when I get sick that I get the most rest, reading & writing done. Because I am forced to rest, relax and lay low. Three things which are very hard for this gal to do on her own. I am a go, go, go, go gal and when a pesky ear infection/throat infection drag me down it messes things up.

And I have noticed this week that things I hardly ever eat all of a sudden sound good to me. Like instant mashed potatoes, pancakes, apple juice, my best friends macroni & cheese, and Campbells chicken noodle soup. ( the traditional can - one I grew up eating - the basic, basic) Probably because their about the only things I can get down my throat. None the less they have become my best friends this week.

I am happy to report that I am on the mend. Not at all ready to swing for a homerun, but maybe a enough for a single hit. Thanks to my antibiotics and lots of rest I might just live another day ;o)
And just so you know my mom did call me and tell me "you'll be better in no time" - just like the good ole days. It brought a smile and slight tear - just knowing that even as a 28 year old women - 3000 miles away she still cares and wishes she was here to take care of me.

A friend Loves at all times

The relationships/friendships between women are a truely amazing thing. I have always known this fact but was recently reminded of it once again. (Sometimes you take things for granted and it takes a moment of stupidity to remind you how important things really are.)

Women have this unique ability to lash out, forgive/forget & then cry all within minutes of fighting/arguing with a good friend. I know when God was creating us He knew that we would need this ability to make it through life and didnt hesitate in awarding us this trait instead of our counterparts. But along with this trait, ability, curse.... whatever you might call it comes much sorrow, exhaustion, misconception, frustration and lots & lots of tears.

This unique trait that was bestowed upon us women was recently tested and applied in my own life. On two seperate occassions with different friends I was brought to my breaking point....and sadly I reacted in the wrong manner. I spouted off (imagine that ) and then I did what I do best...I turned and ran as far from them as I could get. Afraid to face the facts, admit I was wrong, upset that I had been cornered and confronted. But within minutes was able to see the reality of the situation, see where I was wrong, see where I needed to change & wanted to change. I came back to both of them, apologized and then shed those tears that us women are sooooo famous for.

And as I sit here typing now... a tear is shed but this time with a smile upon my face. Because I am reminded of the following verse "A friend Loves at all times" Prov. 17:17. And I am reminded of how great my friends truely are. How much they make me laugh, keep me accountable, forgive my attuides, put up with my sarcasim & sports talk/stats, speak sense into me when needed (and we know I need this quite often) and yes.... even cry with me. A true friendship is one that sticks by you through and through no matter what comes your way. Thru thick and thin....they are there...ready to do battle on your behalf all in the true name of Love & Friendship.

**This blog is dedicated to all my friends (and you know who you are) who have laughed, cried, confronted and just stood by me through the years. Without you life would be a very sad place. You make my life enjoyable and fun. Thank You!**

Stitch & Pitch

Tonight my blog is about the Seattle Mariner's fan appreciation nights. What has our sports world come to when we combine Knitting and an all American classic such as Baseball???
I ask you this....... do the two even remotely sound similar?? Well, someone within the Mariner's franchise in effort to draw more fans decided that the two go hand n hand.

Thats right you're reading right....tonight the game against Cleveland has been named "Stitch & Pitch" night at Safeco. They have reserved a special section just for the Knitters and their fans. They will even have special booths set up inside the stadium selling yarn and patterns.

No, offense to those who knit...but knit at a baseball game? Do you really have time to watch the game as you are knitting? And what if a fly ball comes in your direction? Combine the ball with your needles and for sure "someone will poke an eye out." Plus, its hard enough to pay attention to a baseball game normally but combine that with knitting. I just dont see how the two can go together. I know I am a huge sports fan and I am trying to push my own feelings & love for the game aside. But it just doesn't make any sense to me. Am I alone here?

This morning when I polled some co-workers about this very topic and how crazy it was I was met with some opposition. I was informed that knitting has become very popular and was told that "it's not your grandmothers hobby anymore". Did you know they have knitting clubs in Seattle? And even wilder is the fact that most of the members are College age girls. One of the coolest women I know (my pastors wife Shannon) has taken up this very hobby and loves it. So this cool/trendy new hobby is making its rounds.

But honestly - knitting at a baseball game? Come on????? Is this what our Mariners have sunk too to recruit new fans in the middle of a slump? Whats next? Scrapbookers night or better yet Stampers night? Even the sportcasters who call the game on the tv/radio got into the whole "Stich & Pitch" theme. When Miguel Olivo hit a homerun in the sixth inning they said "He really hit the stiches out of that ball" Come on?? Where do we say enough is enough? Quit messing with an all American past time & just ... "P L A Y... B A L L"

**Please note their are no harsh feelings against any knitters by the author of this blog**

Bus Rules = Good Etiquette

So for those of who you dont know I take the bus to work every day. This requires a 35 minute ride each way on a lovely Snohomish Community Transit bus. When I accepted my job I didnt know it involved commuting by bus, but I have come to enjoy this form of public transportation.

However, today I am blogging the "Bus Rules". In an effort that others will read & pass along these rules. And better Bus Etiquette will PREVAIL!

When you take a bus there are just some common courtesy rules, under written rules that you learn/pick up on quickly. Kinda of like when you join the military...no one tells you where the mess hall is, you just follow the crowd and find it. Well, same thing with the "Bus rules"

Here are the 10 golden "Bus Rules" for those who aren't commuting Pro's:

1. Be on time = dont come speeding into the park n ride as bus is pulling up and expect the driver & your fellow commuters to wait for you.

2. Be courteous of your headphone usage = dont have your music so loud that your fellow commuter can hear the rap crap you're listening too at 5:30 in the morning.

3. Silence your cell phone = self explanatory - no one wants to hear your cell phone going off

4. Cell phone usuage s/b kept at a minimum = no one wants to hear about your adventures the night before or about your crappy day at work. We had crappy days too...save that conversation for when you're not on the bus.

5. If you're going to sleep then lean against the window and not on your neighbor.

6. Dont sit in one seat and put your stuff in the other seat keep your stuff on your lap and allow others to sit if they'd like.

7. If you bring on a newspaper then leave with it. As much as I do enjoy the paper I dont want to clean up your mess before I sit down.

8. Gentlemen = give up your seat to a lady. Dont make her stand. Didn't your mamma teach you manners???

9. Be courteous of your perfume/cologne = dont take a bath in it. It might smell good to you but it dont smell good to me.

And lastly & the most important:

10. If a line has formed = go to the end. Dont just come stand at the bus sign and expect that you will be first. Who do you think you are? The line leader??? Your fellow commuters have been waiting in a line patiently a lot longer than you. And we earned our place in line. We all learned about lines in elementary school. No one likes a "cuter"

This last rule has spurred my blog today. People are soooo inconsiderate and it really ticks me off how rude some people can be. A few months ago I spoke up to a guy and said " Excuse me son, but this lady has been waiting long before you, please take your place at the end of the line". He wasn't happy with me and stomped his way went to the end of the line like a 2 year old. Here's the kicker he was about my age and I called him "son" - but I was just fit to be tied that morning.

So there you have them, the 10 golden "Bus Rules" - now if you ever have to commute by bus you will be prepared. My hope is that now we are all informed of these 10 golden rules and Bus Etiquette will prevail. Which will result in a better commuting world. ;o) A girl can hope right?

Here today you can play with fire

Why is it that all year we tell kids "dont play with fire you'll get burned" But once a year when the 4th comes around we hand them a sparkler or equivalent and say "go have fun - just be careful"

Isn't this giving our kids a double message??? One that says its okay on this one day and only because everyone else is doing it.

So then what else is okay on that one day a year??? Sure this double message seems small but where else will we let small double messages interfere? (this should be the subject of another blog...too long for this one)

Dont get me wrong I love fireworks and lighting them off just like the rest of my friends. And I love the reason we celebrate on the 4th. But it seems every year some child or some one being stupid is hurt, mamed, burned or killed by fireworks. Seems we should just pay a little more attention to safety and to the double messages we are sending to our kids.

Okay, deep breath......now I'm done with my vent.

Have a happy 4th everyone!! And be SAFE!

"She's like the wind"

So today in Seattle it was just beautiful out. As I exited church I knew today would be a good day for a Greenlake visit. (For those not from Seattle, Greenlake is a 3.1 walking, running, biking path trail around a lake in the middle of the city - a must visit if ever in Seattle)

See my friend and I have ventured out into the unknown world of running. Both running/walking several times a week. Running has always been a fun thing for me. I love being "one with nature" as I run. Letting my mind wonder and just getting out into nature. My friend lives out of state but we chat often and the other night he told me about the Seattle half & full marathon this fall. Running a marathon is one of my lifetime goals. So before I even realized what I was saying I said "I'll do it with you"....not taking in the full toll of this adventure until the next day. When I awoke thinkin "What the heck???"

So I marched myself down to Barnes & Noble to do some research. (and one of the best places to people watch) I browsed through lots of books and runners magazines. Eventually purchasing a guide book for a female runner.

Then today I got around Greenlake in less than half hour walking/running...and so decided what the heck I'll go around again nuttin else to do this afternoon. As I am walking/running the song from Dirty Dancing .... "She's like the wind" is running through my head. Which by the way has nothing to do with running...but for some reason it is in my head...anyways....I finished up my two laps around the lake with an iced Passion fruit tea with sugar free vanilla from the great Starbucks! And then popped into Jock n Jill. A store created entirely for the runner..and they have everything u can imagine in there. Even letting you try on the shoe and run up the hill to see if it works for you.

So upon entering I meet a nice guy named Chuck who after several minutes I find out has been running for 25 years, is married with several kids, coaches runners, has run the Seattle Marathon several times and writes aritcles for Runners Northwest magazine. So feeling confident in my sales man, he has me run for him thru the store to see my "running stride". Then he helps me pick out a new pair of "running shoes" and tells me to stop runnning in my current ones - which offer no support for my "pronating stride" and even today rubbed a blister on my foot.

I leave the store feeling confident in my purchase and in my new adventure. Chuck offers me lots of support, encouragement, web sites to visit, and gives me free copy of the current Runners Northwest. Tells me to aim for the Half Marathon later this summer and get into some local 5k & 10k run/walks around the area this summer. Will keep you posted....as I am off and running.

A gulp of water

There they were all sitting there on the porch dried out and crying out for water. If they could speak I'm sure they would've said "where have you been all week?" My plants speaking to me now thats a crazy idea.

I planted them last weekend, but in my madness of life forgot to water them all week. So this morning when I awoke to the soothing sound of the rain I remembered them and rushed out to the porch. I moved them all out off the porch and into the pounding rain. Two of them had to remain partially under the porch awning as they are a little more delicate than the rest and the pounding rain would crush them. All while thinking.... "there now I wont have to water them".

It occurred to me in that very moment that my plants are just like me. I am that dying out plant that is in desperate need of water. By the end of the week life, work, friends, family have sucked me dry. I collapse on Friday night and wait for my "water" to fill me back up. It seems like this is how I feel more and more lately. I feel like one of my plants and am just waiting for that gulp of water to revitalize me.

I find it so amazing how God knows just how much water to give me and when to give it too me. He knows when I am just too delicate and only need a small amount. He never forgets about me even when I forget about him. And I am always in awe of His ablillities to satisfy my every need and come to my aid even when I think I am A-Ok. Through His word, a friends call, a song or as I attend to my neglected plants He pierces my heart and reminds me he is still in control.

Dating/Singleness is just crazy

So it seems like I am in this never ending dating/singleness craze of life. And sometimes its not all its cracked up to be. Its fun, but gets old afterwhile. I can only sit home on a Friday night for so long and when the movie store manager knows you.... "houston we have a problem".

So I've been trying this whole internet dating thing. Yes, people I have ventured into the whole online "cyberspace" unknown. And its not bad....its what you make of it. I've met some freaks, geeks and loners. But for the most part its been okay. Where else is someone in 2005 suppose to meet another nice person?? Bars/Clubs are out. And lets admit it, eligible/single men aren't hanging out anywhere I am. My hangouts are pretty much isolated to work, church, Starbucks (well sometimes), grocery store, gas stations (more freaks here than anywhere else.) etc..... And so far no luck at any of these places. Sometimes I think how great would it be if he just plopped down on my doorstep....whatever would I do?? Probably faint.

So anyways, this whole online thing has been good to me. Lots of dinners, coffee, walking around Greenlake dates. But nothing too serious. Its been fun, and thats what dating is suppose to be, right?

And then eventually you meet someone you enjoy being with. Then before you know it one thing leads to another and you find yourself married. Isn't that how it happens?

But now I dont even know where I stand on the whole marriage thing. Up till recently I thought it was this great thing and wanted to be part of it. But now it seems it has some drawbacks as well. Within 6months 4 friends marriage's have broken up. What is going on? Is it an epidemic? It sure makes me think twice about getting married.

So who knows maybe I'll keep up with this dating/singleness thing a little bit longer. Cant hurt me anymore than it has and it is fun. So who the heck knows. I will keep my blog updated with any new dating fun, stories, gripes/complaints etc....cause its nice to just vent to cyberspace.

Back from Vacation

Back from Vacation and what a great trip it was. Had a good time with my family and really soaked in some of the Florida sun rays. Best trip I've had to see my family in a long, long time and I was really able to relax and be myself.
Got a new tattoo with my dad....it was a real father/daughter bonding moment let me tell you ;o) It was fun.
My nephew is the cutest thing ever and no one can change my mind on that!! I am sure if he grows up with a complex it will be from all my kisses and picture taking of him. I am sure he was glad to see me leave!
So I am just getting into this blogging thing and trying to have fun with it. Who knows who will read it or what will come of it, but hey its new and fun.

Blogging what is this?

Blogging? Whats that? What do you post? What do u say? Do u post every day? Is it like a diary/journal? Those were the questions I asked my friend. I had never heard of this blogging idea till last weekend and it of course intrigued me.
So here I am fumbling my way through this set up and posting to become an official "Blogger". But will I do the blogger world justice? That is the question....so we shall see. No promises.
